Gygax' strength wasn't so much in originality, as in ecclectic re-combination. He took Sword & Sorcery short-stories, Tolkien races, Hammer Film undead-turning and a lot of other disparate elements and combined them in a new whole.

Sounds more like a rebuttal on why his system was not based on Tolkien. Lol

I was an avid player back back in the day. Not an early adopter but mid-80's and it was apparent that similarities did exist but nobody cared. It was fun and we were the dark side of society being brainwashed into the devil's work ... Lol
