Yes, exactly.

When we tell stories, we can only pull from our own experiences. Even as archaeologists we interpret the findings under our own assumptions and experiences in society. This is because, fundamentally, the only way we can understand someone else's position is by imagining ourselves in that position through empathy.

That doesn't mean these stories aren't worth telling, in fact it can often give stories many levels of deeper meaning - but a shoddy tale that's clearly built from someone's own life with lasers and aliens included isn't going to have meaning or depth.

I guess my point is that all stories are just fantastical re-skins of our world, but it's only the shitty ones that make this obvious.
