No you gotta go with more of the alt tech / alt media / independent journalism. There's still going to be minefields of disinfo and fakery but I find it easier to sift through and identify the BS from truth in those realms, if comparative sourcing is used properly.

There are simpler methods, like licking your finger and holding it up to see which way the wind blows. I only believe what I read here, as long as it doesn't have a bunch of down votes.

You are right about not knowing but I don't think that's the issue. Explain how taking in more fake news sources is advantageous over fewer fake news sources.
