This post seems to overlook the fact that most enforceable intellectual property has a time limit. The exclusionary right granted by a patent generally lasts less than 20 years. Patents are also a useful way to get people to reveal their solution to a problem, which can lead to further development (in addition to other people inventing new things to "get around" a patent before it expires).
