It's a post modern thing. Modern narratives are only partly about story and a lot about self reference to the medium of film itself. Actors carry the weight and pull of their familiarity into their roles as a subconscious hook to the audience to feel like they're participating in a bigger adventure than just the movie's plotline itself, i.e. the actor's career trajectory.

Pretty self absorbed art, ain't it?
