A scholarly book by two college professors of history "The Venona Papers" made quite a splash since the people who McCarthy indicated were USSR Agents-in-place, really WERE what he said they were. VENONA was a top secret project which decrypted the coded messages sent to US spies by the KGB, spanning years from around 1935 to 1945. I recommend reading the books, there are two volumes and comparing what you read to research on what exactly McCarthy said (see the Congressional Record).
