My state has a hybrid system of touchscreen and paper. It puts a bit more responsibility on the voter. You vote on a computer touchscreen; then a paper ballot is printed out which you are to "proofread" and deposit in the ballot box. Ideally, the touchscreen totals will match the paper ballot totals. The election office is telling us that the paper ballots are used for the official counts, but the "instructions" do not explain any details beyond that.
