Truman was very accommodating to Jewish demands for the post-WWII world. He was exasperated that they never showed any gratitude and that nothing he did seemed enough. At one point he said, "Jesus Christ himself couldn't please them, what in Hell can I do?"

Truman was very plain spoken. There's a story about Harry and Bess attending a posh party, where he mentions "manure." One of the uppity women fussed at Bess about Harry using such a vulgar word. Bess just told her that she had no idea how long it had taken to get him to use the word "manure."

Their daughter, Margaret, married a cousin of mine, one of the last good reporters from the old days of the New York Times.
