It has nothing to do with "the man", it has everything to do with taxpayer funded software, and the ability for ALL to benefit from the code.

For an analogy, it would be much like taking taxpayer dollars, contracting out to a company (like Microsoft) to pave the roads, and then allowing them total control over those roads, they get additional payments for patching holes in this very shitty built road, and they also charge the gov't toll usage which is then passed on to the taxpayers. In other words, its a gravy train for the company who owns the license.
