Thank you for the correction.
I would also suggest researching further as to whether there is any charge or evidence of "laundering."
Your own link does not provide it. Instead it says "In addition, to avoid reporting the full amount of his compensation in Nissan financials, as required by Japanese law beginning in 2010, Ghosn had Kelly structure complicated deferred payment plans which went unreported under an aggressive interpretation of the disclosure rules which Nissan's outside auditors had not signed off on, and which totaled around $80 million at the time of his arrest eight years later.[150] According to Nikkei reports, Ghosn told investigators that he instructed Kelly to handle the compensation reporting in a legal manner, and Kelly told investigators that he acted on advice from outside law firms and the Financial Services Agency in handling the reporting."
All that I have ever seen, and I have spent some considerable time on it, is charges of "misreporting," "concealing," "unauthorized charges" and so forth.
It's a pretty well known fact that people in business involved in large amounts of money pretty commonly report one thing on one form and another on another, often for legit reasons (different rules on the forms or different applicability of law in the different cases.) For example Trump reportedly did this with bank loans vs other documents, and it's been reasonably argued that there is no evidence that the discrepancies were illegal.
Did Ghosn steal money? Don't know.
Do know that the arrest happened immediately after he was reportedly going to have a board vote to put a non-Japanese into th CEO position, with the result of keeping the CEO position in Japanese hands. Big deal to the Japanese. Ghosn was CEO only because Nissan was dying and they accepted rescue even from the gaijin rather than go under.
Did he get paid a shitload? Absolutely, and most executives that bail a company out from deathbed to multi-billions get compensated a shitload in all kinds of different ways, as getting paid cash-only is tax-disadvantageous.
Japan has its own system of control and its own legal system which is not the same as ours by any means, and is absolutely stacked against the gaijin (non-Japanese.)
