You are not. Have you read about the American Indian trackers who the Army took notice of, and hired? Once they conformed them to the military haircut, their tracking skills stopped. This happened repeatedly; the Army then did experiments: take two trackers, cut one's hair, and watch their performance. The one who didn't receive the haircut, performed better.

This then led to an understanding that long hair helps with tracking; meaning, long hair helps with "detection" somehow!

You are stunningly close to the answer. Really neat, as I came to this post wanting to share the info about the trackers, but had wanted to read the comments first to ensure I wasn't being redundant. Anyway, you're right!
