Banks would refuse to give them loans unless they purchased really expensive new equipment, then when they would fall behind on payments the banks would foreclose on the loans. I remember reading about one farmer who lost his family farm and went in to plead with the bank beforehand and they basically told him to fuck off. He came back and shot the bank manager to death.

I can't say I approve because each time it's a tragic loss of life, but I totally get it why a farmer would do this. On the other hand, I can't shed even a tiny tear or sigh for a dead banker. Those guys are the worst sort of human being.
