Originally, early Christians within the Roman empire would identify one to another by each drawing a curve into the sand: together, the curves formed a fish. This was a Christian symbol.
Christians were mocked by Pagan Romans with the cross, applied as a derogatory symbol, basically 'Your God was killed'. Christians adoped and santified the Cross.
Pagan Roman writers also mocked the followers of Jesus as "Little Christs" = Christ-ians
The -ian suffux indicates the diminutive case, 'little'
Christians also adopted and sanctified this term as their, our, identity as Christians.
