A friend of mine used to work for the American Cancer Society (or was it the American Heart Association?? now I can't remember) and quit because it was so immoral. They get their statistics ("we spend x% of our resources on community outreach, x% on research", etc) by asking the employees each week to fill out a time sheet. If my friend had spent 20 minutes that week reading wikipedia about something medical, she could have put that on her time sheet as research. I shit you not. And then people who donate would be seeing that oh, look, they spend this much on research so I should donate to them!
She also said that a few times a year they would be sent out to various retreats for team building shit, aka paid vacations. On top of that, she was making a hefty salary - much more than she is currently.
If she didn't have scruples, she could still be working there and making six figures to essentially do nothing but dupe the public.

The only good thing I can say about the ACA is that I do personally know someone who had their cancer treatment (and they survived) paid for by them.
