RFID chips started being openly manufactured in the 70s.

In the 80s, I was looking into using them in a law firm's library to track books within the building, as some attorneys weren't returning books to the shelves in a timely manner. A chip could be slipped into the spine of a book. If a book was missing from the library, the librarian would be able to ping that book's RFID chip and get it's location on a computer map of the building.

Now they can make chips small enough to go on ants.
