We vacationed in Ontario every summer when I was growing up. My memories of Canada from the 1960's and early 1970's are of very grounded and decent people. We enjoyed the natural beauty and the kindness of our northern neighbors. Dad fished from dawn until dusk, and we tagged along with him. When we weren't on the water, we were picking blueberries. For years, Dad hired the local guides to help him learn where to fish. An old (to me) Chippewa man named Ike was his favorite guide. My family is very politically attuned, with my parents having fled Eastern Europe after the war. Back in those days it seemed like our Canadian neighbors were very self sufficient and mostly apolitical. In recent years Canada seems riven by the same political forces that have caused such destruction here in the US, pitting neighbor against neighbor. My hope is that President Trump, and those he inspires, can bring us all back to a more peaceful existence. I pray for a peace that is founded in honesty, mutual respect and personal liberty.
