If you can get your hands on an Orthodox or Catholic Bible, compare Genesis 11 with the Protestant/Jewish version. The timeline from the Flood to Abraham is 750 years longer in the older Septuagint/Catholic version than the Masoretic/Protestant version. The Septuagint was the Greek translation of the Old Testament, written in 250 BC.

The Jewish editing was done in the 1st or 2nd century AD, after Paul's Epistle to the Hebrews. The purpose was to promote the idea that Noah's son Shem was also called Melchizedek. The Epistle maintains that Melchizedek was an earlier manifestation of Christ.
