Several things, he started out as a high school math teacher, then went to work at Bear Sterns, quickly became a partner, then started his own company. He only took on clients with $1 billion+. His operation with the girls looked like your typical honeypot. Considering his unusual rise to the top, someone wanted that honeypot.

Both state and federal prosecutors were highly involved in ensuring Epstein wasn't really punished for his heinous crimes and that very few details came out. When you see that kind of protection for a bad dude, he's an asset of some kind. From the article:
