There's a side issue here that is a lot more important.

You know there is one or two persuasive people who have one of the admins ears right now don't you? They are driving this change. You've avoided SRS here quite admirably but you still have policy driven by a few chosen superusers. The rules are being changed for them. Can only mod 3 defaults? Nope we'll change that Janitors are exempt. The majority of users say 3 defaults is enough, we don't care, fuck them here mod some more. Want to mod more than ten subs? We'll change that too. Anything goes? Nah, not if you dont like it.

Keep talking like you matter though.

What do you mean by this?

Nvm, I see it: https://voat.co/user/cynabuns

@Cynabuns? Last I saw you were stepping down from 2 subs to avoid modding more than 3 defaults? Now you are modding 4 defaults and 11 subs total. Also v/cheers on your alt?

Rule Changes

We have decided we are going to consider L3 / Janitors full moderators on @System subs. Thus our previous rule that a user may not moderate more than 3 @System subs remains unchanged. I want to sincerely thank @Cynabuns for graciously stepping down from a few @System mod positions so that this rule is not violated. Thanks a ton.

Spammers have been hitting the site up frequently since the api was updated.

I know because a couple of the anti-spam guys have been following my bot around accusing me of giving aid to the spammers by archiving their links -w-

Usually gets downvoated pretty quick, though.

As I said I've looked through he deletions on the system subs. There just aren't that many at the minute. If it's going to get worse I want to see how.

From what I've seen it's happening across the site. I'm guessing they're focusing on the system subs because they don't want to take the step of taking over subverses being squatted by spammers just yet.

Damn that has to be lame, both the downvoats and accusations, and the fact that your bot is a bloody traitor. I guess there is no way to differentiate is there?

Nope, they use Facebook to get around domain blacklists and they change usernames too frequently to follow.

Only thing I can do is refresh my overview constantly and I don't have that kinda patience.

I'm not sure. Wasn't too long ago that everyone was saying to let the Voats decide everything. Now all I see is demands for more moderation. I don't really like where its heading, because anytime you suggest that more time or effort should be put in to determine whether its a real user or not. You get all kinds of backlash. Its really weird.

I spent some time trying to keep Voat a haven of free speech. But like you said, there is some kind of weird shift going. If I make a comment saying I'm willing to put up with some spam to protect free speech in Voat, it gets downvoated now.

I like that the admins pose janitor positions to the community, but I agree that there need to be hard limits. Voat is a small community with frequent content submitters to each system sub. Moderators should be from the pool of the frequent content submitters for these subs. This step by the admins was a step in the right direction because there is some community input on who is going to mod. There needs to be a lot more; something like a process to nominate active users from each system sub for the roles, where active voaters comment with their approval or disapproval for each candidate? There is no need for any one user to moderate more than one system sub in any capacity, and were this the case, the additional 5 Janitors would not be an issue. The moderators who do mod more than one sys sub have done a great job, and this is not an admonition of their hard work.

The users aren't going to get input though just the current mods.

It's an open invite for users to apply, and the rest of voat can comment on those requests. It's not ideal, but it's a start. I didn't know that only current mod input matters; it's something that can change over time if users want it, right?

Let it play out. I think it's overkill but just wait and see what happens. The big problem will be when the spam dries up and the janitors turn their attention to youtubers and people submitting news from one source too much.

Once its played out it could be too late.

I'm a bit confused here you aren't listed as a janitor anywhere in your profile.I'm not talking about whatever you do in reportspammers. Maybe you applied?(My mistake I'm going blind.)

I can only hope the other 20+ people who have applied alongside you will find something to do if it dries up as well.

The sooner spam is deleted the less effective it is. If it's deleted fast enough the spammers will hopefully move elsewhere because spamming Voat is no longer cost effective.

I don't think cost is an issue, any intelligent advertising company already has the submission process completely automated.

Looking through the deleted posts and topics on a lot of subs lately. It's clear we are losing control of free speech and "no censorship." @atko and @puttitout have been pretty weak on kicking out mods. It's a simple thing, make a hard rule and remove the mods. Repeat as needed. I think they are either too busy or are changing their position now that they see what FREE SPEECH actually is.
