Indeed, the network driver crashed. My systems administrator upgraded the kernel and enabled a different driver three weeks ago. So far it's been doing very well.

My guess is that the driver was inefficient, because the CPU load was huge when I logged in during a busy period (the machine had only one core, and 1 GB RAM, it has been scaled up now). The TCP packets were piling up in memory, eventually overflowing into swap, which renders the machine unusable.

The machine basically went into denial of service because of natural growth, but most of all a buggy networking driver.

For reference, the website went from ~1 TiB / Month to 6 TiB / Month at once. We're also looking at new ISPs, because this is getting quite expensive. Luckily the donations and ad revenue are still break-even.

That sucks, thanks for explaining the situation. Edit: is it possible to delete or rename files? I uploaded one but then I realized it kept its generic "screen.png" name and I'd like to rename it.
