Nobody said his role was in fact Robert Johnson. I don't even see how it was. Just an embodiment of that story.

While I don't see it as a bio-pic, it certainly borrowed and intimated at the connection with Johnson. Even so, when I think of a story about a poverty-stricken youth growing up in the old south and learning the Blues as a means of escape from that situation, I surely don't envision a young Italian kid.

While there were other Bluesmen with a similar story to Johnson, he became the quintessential figurehead of that era. He was quite influential on the music that he inspired and what came after.
