Wow, you're reducing all the games in the world to only one subtype? And you make it your sole argument? I wonder if I should really answer to you or if it's completely futile...
Where are the superheros in SimCity? Does the female transport adviser has to be sexy in that game? Of course a fantasy game doesn't feature normal people, but male characters do heroic things (as they should) and female characters are helpless. They could very well put a female character that is capable of doing anything the action of the game requires. And she could be beautiful without being (almost) naked. Male characters are represented in all sorts of ways (again, as they should), but female characters are left with about 5 different roles, all related in their lack of influence on the main plot.
I know this is an over-generalisation and there are some games that feature female characters in different roles, but there should be enough of them that we don't feel the need to celebrate them, it should just be normal.
And you completely misunderstood what I meant by normal. A game character can have a human reaction and still be badass.
This is exactly the same as cinema : of course characters are shallow in action flicks, but there are people who are tired of the formulaic crap that is mostly produced by Hollywood all the time. A regular action movie will make good money. An action movie where the characters react more like human beings (exceptional human beings for sure) and not robots will make a lot of money and critics will like it as much as the dumb masses. People that enjoy international cinema, independent movies, Woody Allen films, and the likes exist, because cinema has evolved from a light, shallow entertainment for the masses to a proper art form. There is a small diversification in films, but it's almost non-existent in games. If we want games to be recognized as a respectable art form, it needs to expend and diversify itself.
You've shifted the goalpost from "appearing" normal to "reacting" normally. This discussion was never about psychology, but physical appearance. I will not discuss the psychology of characters with you, because we don't disagree, and the point is irrelevant to the true question.
Namely, the fact some people are unhappy with beautiful looking characters. Why shouldn't the female transport adviser be sexy? I'm a homosexual, and that's not a problem for me. That's not a problem for men attracted to beauty. Why should it be a problem for women? Projecting your own feelings of inadequacy onto society is not healthy, and it needs to change into self improvement. By the same argument you might suggest the Greeks were wrong for having nude statues, instead of honestly realizing that sex appeal and beauty are generally the same: We like nudity, we like the human form, and there's nothing wrong with showing it off.
You've shifted the goalpost from "appearing" normal to "reacting" normally.
I've never talked about appearance before you mentioned it. I even re-read all my comment replies to you to make sure. Not even once did I mention appearance. You shifted the meaning of normal in your last reply. I always talked about a normal intellect. In other words, a character that acts like it is human.
The appearance of female characters bothers me a bit less, but the feminist argument remains the same : they don't want to take anything away, they simply want more diversity.
Why shouldn't the female transport adviser be sexy?
Re-read my comment. I never said she couldn't be, I asked why she had to. I even put it in bold so you can see it! The problem isn't that there are sexy women in games. The problem is that there is nothing but sexy women. What feminists want is simply some examples of different women. Anyway, that's the sensible argument. If any feminist says otherwise, then attack them for their point of view.
Just compare the situation of female characters to the one of male characters for a second. There are all types of male characters : handsome, ugly, strong, weak, fat, skinny, and the same goes for personality. Female characters? Sexy, has big bouncing boobs, almost naked, says nothing but "help me" or "fuck me". I'm a heterosexual man myself, and personally, I prefer small to average size boobs. But these are very rare in video games, and I don't even care that much, it just serves as a counter argument that all male players want big breasted naked female characters. Anyway, if I really wanted to see tits, I'd watch porn, I wouldn't play games!
