There are a few websites that go into a lot of detail, I thing Gamergate.me may still be a thing?

My best quick summary is that people who are very involved in the culture and reporting around gaming can become greedy, ideologically charged, and just radicalized by whatever other means, who then try to push their message onto everyone they can. These people then fight with other groups of people who are filled with hatred instead of greed. Then there are a bunch of people stuck in the middle who all want different things but maybe aren't as alarmed by either side. Gaming/old Internet culture vs. newer and more anti-privilege culture. And it was really ignited by some insignificant sociopath doing some insignificant deals (but still shitty nonetheless) with gaming bloggers using personal relations and absolutely no merit. After being called out in it, a tsunami of bullshit from the press followed, horseshit was then thrown from both sides to varying degrees, things blown out of proportion, morons/profiteers kicked the hornet nest repeatedly, the trolls rejoiced in this amazing source of drama. They were the real winners. Well them and the ones who used the controversy to get social justice money, I guess.

The full implications go far beyond gaming news and corruption there, and a new wave of cancer is joining the various forms already entrenched in the media. But Gamergate specifically doesn't go much further than games.

I like this explanation of the subsequent swirl of polarizing press that followed the original actions that led to this gamer controversy. Its gets to the heart of the aftermath without a lot of trigger language. You sir, need more upvotes.
