I never figured out what it was and searching just brought back a bunch of heated commentary and arguing.

The short of it is that #GamerGate is a hashtag meant to improve discussion regarding video-games.
The long story is that it all started with Zoe Quinn gaining favorable press coverage from major gaming sites. When /r/gaming users caught wind of this, moderators automatically banned any and all discussion regarding the new findings. Afterwards, people went to 4chan's /v/ to discuss this conflict of interest, but got banned by m00t (edited in citation). Afterwards, people went to 8chan's /v/ and a little known subreddit by the name of /r/KotakuInAction. Since then, people, such as BoogiePopRobin have been discovering conflicts of interest.
Extensive #GamerGate history + backstory (edit: with citiations).
