Piers Anthony wrote a decent book series called "Incarnations of Immortality"^1 the first book "On A Pale Horse" is about Death and how he came to be.

Death has to deal with the other incarnations Time, Mother Nature, Mars, The Devil and others. It's a good read, the other books go on about the other incarnations.

You go through all of the books and no one ever meets God the impression is that God is too busy and wants nothing to do with mortal affairs. God not wanting anything to do with mortal affairs is presented through the series as him having a bet with the Devil.

The final book is about God and you only meet him I think twice, when someone does finally go through all the b.s. to talk to God he is so entranced by himself sitting in front of a mirror admiring his absolute perfection that this person can't even talk to him.

God was selfish, by the end of the book God was overthrown and replaced by someone else that could do the job.

The whole series is a good read.

Holy shit, someone else heard of Piers Anthony. Those books were really good. Like couldn't put em down and finish them in 2-3 days good. I read them in gradeschool and they are probably why I don't believe in fairy tales.

I came across On a Pale Horse about six years ago, and I couldn't put them down.

If I came across them earlier in life they would have really changed my perspective on that kind of stuff.
