It is worth noting that the 'conservative' South was the electoral backbone of liberal Democrats like Wilson, FDR, and Adlai Stevenson. Even JFK and William Jennings Bryan. In those days voting Republican in Dixie was liable to get you socially ostracised. Suffice it to say there weren't a lot of Southrons voting for a New England conservative like Cal Coolidge even if he clobbered his Democrat opponent almost 2-1 in 1924. And given his views of civil rights legislation it isn't surprising.
