There were certainly a lot of dangerous and nasty gangs in New York City that were of Irish origins. People tend to forget this, but the Irish held their own and were hard workers and in spite of their leftism they remain solid citizens of the United States of America.

I think the Irish did not suffer from Anglo-Saxon intrusion, as the Boers did, but they certainly lived a rough one in the United States and living a living a rough life can make one a hardened criminal quite quickly.
