I think the English language won't retreat. I see non-native speakers using it on the internet between each other fairly common. It is today's Latin ('latin' as in the language of Rome, not latin-American)
That doesn't mean America or Europe aren't endangered, but I think that even if we are genetically submerged in a sea of mud, the English language will survive that.

French was the lingua franca of diplomacy and Europe, up to the Edwardian era up to the outbreak of WW1. Look where it is today.
There is no reason to assume that English will fare better as soon as the tide turns.

There are several processes that 'protect' English, so to speak.
Dutch is still the language of the Surinam parliament, even though —and precisely because— all the ethnic groups have their own language.
In addition, Chinese might not be attractive for a variety of reasons, involving political and cultural (dis)tastes, but mainly because its spelling seems hugely inefficient as compared to the Roman alphabet. (Efficiency-wise, I would rather imagine Hangul —the Korean 'alphabet'— take the lead, but this is not likely the case.
Btw The weird and enigmatic thing with English is that, although the usage of the Roman alphabet is efficient, the English spelling convention is not at all! Wasn't it Shaw who suggested that 'fish' migth as well be spelled "ghoti"? The 'gh' from 'laugh', the 'o' from 'women', and the 'ti' from 'nation' :D (I looked it up: Shaw is associated with ghoti but did probably not came up with it.)

French was mostly the lingua franca of the upper classes. It never attained the currency English has.
