I used to be an atheist as well, even then I observed correlations between religion and societal structure. My standpoint when I was an atheist eventually became

"the mass population is stupid and easily manipulated and therefore religion is necessary in order to keep them grounded to reality, to resist corruption, and to maintain social cohesion"

Ethics are defined democratically and ethics cannot be defined objectively. To the rationalist this presents a very dangerous paradox.
