It's the same question as with David Duke. Having been a Klansman has it held him back or made him well known at all? It is doubtful Rockwell could have been a well known figure in the first place without the Nazi uniforms.

I can imagine many American WWII veterans felt put off by his use of NatSoc iconography even though they probably held the same core beliefs as he did. Presentation matters, as does pacing and tact. Knowing when to be subtle and when to be provocative can be key, in my opinion.
