Western civilization was born in Greece. Democracy, philosophy, maths, science, etc.

Western wouldn't be what it is without Greece.

Just because they are doing like shit now doesn't mean they are not part of the western civilization.

They are even part of the European Union.

It doesn't have anything to do with them being a bankrupt, communist run state. It's mostly that they come out of Orthodoxy. I take it you're unaware of the East-West Schism and its relevance to Western Civilization. It's the same reason why Russia isn't a Western state.

Ancient Greece does argue for them though. However, whether ancient Greece is even properly seen as part of the West is very contentious. Western Civilization is more properly seen as originating around the time of Charlemagne.

There are other Orthodox states in the EU too. What I am firmly comfortable in saying is that Greece is the most Western of Orthodox states.

True, but wasn't Greece philosophy (via Thomas Aquino a.o.) an enormous influence over us, and us primarily? Not to say: exclusively? I mean, I presume the Russians know their Plato and Aristotle, but I am not aware Greek philosopy was a huge influence for e.g. the Nestorians... On the other hand, much of Greek philosophy was allegedly preserved by the nascent Islamo-Arabic civilization, only to be rediscovered (by 'us') during the Renaissance...
