The intrigue is of particular interest as this centered in part around the Soviet shootdown of a Korean airliner that had the president of the intensely anti-Communist John Birch Society, Congressman Larry McDonald of Georgia, as a passenger:

There has long been speculation that the Soviets hit the plane to get McDonald and that McDonald even survived the Soviet attack. This CIA paper doesn't seem to really offer anything on those points though.

That is particularly fascinating. It could be that we find it embarrassing to grant some legitimacy to the angle that domestic anti-Communist organizations and people really seemed to matter to the Soviets and thus, in the grand scheme of things, matter to the whole of the world.
