A new microcensus shows that more than one-fifth of all Germans have some sort of 'immigrant background' - a record high for the Bundesrepublik.

The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reported on Friday that 17.1 million people out of a population of 81.4 million last year had some kind of immigration background.

"some sort of 'immigrant background'" ?

It makes quite a difference, in my perspective at least, if we're dealing with European(-descended), or non-European immigrants.

Most immigrants in Germany - at least before the flood of last year - come from Turkey.

European immigrants are of course much better than non-European but my opinion is that also the European ones should be kept to a minimum. I think it's the best way to preserve the national culture of a country.
