I think it's a very contextual thing. Those who live in cities often cannot afford the median $2400 1-bed apartment on their own and have to rent rooms for a cheap $1000/month often until their forties or later. In the suburbs, people who rent at all, let alone seek out roommates, over the age of thirty are typically criminals, druggies, uneducated, underemployed, lazy, or some superposition of the above.

I'll be the first one to admit I'm underemployed and "lazy" but so what? I pay my rent on time, I keep the house clean and am respectful in all other aspects as a roommate. Why would you care how I chose to spend my time otherwise? I do not have expensive tastes or habits, thus I don't need to work much in order to bankroll my lifestyle. Not sure how that's supposed to be a character flaw unless you view gratuitous consumption as virtuous.
