East China is definitely prime Asian real estate, as you've said. They've had to deal with a great many incursions from Xiongnu/Mongols, Jurchens/Manchus, and other invaders from harsher parts of Asia.
The Yellow River valley, the beginnings of the Han nation, is not in central Asia. Most Americans and Europeans know very little about East Asian history.
