Prejudice means judging someone prior to knowing them. Southern whites had a lot of experience with slaves while northern whites did not bc most of the blacks at the time were not freed in America and the north did not practice slavery.
If whites at the time were really prejudiced against blacks, the northern whites would have wanted to have slavery and the southern whites would have wanted to end it after having so many good experiences with the blacks.
Those with the most experience with the blacks at the time formed the most negative opinions of blacks and supported laws restraining them while those with less experience with the blacks at the time supported laws freeing them.
If anti black sentiment was a result of prejudice then by all means whites in the north should have been the most negative views of blacks and those with the most experience with the blacks (southerners) would have had the most positive views of the blacks.
Whites in the south were racist towards blacks after spending a lot of time with them and as a result of the content of their character.

I will use this term from now on. I am only guilty or postjudice.
