Remember the cotton that the slaves were picking was destined for England, so even if it was grown in Africa rather than America, it still has to be shipped across half the Atlantic. Considering that boats were the only practical form of large scale shipping, it makes more sense economically to grow crops in the American south where there is a ton of available farmland right next to the ocean. America also had way more infrastructure than Africa, even in the 18th century.
