The reality is that the civil war was fought over whether or not the federal government rules by consent of the governed. The south seceded, as was their right. The north then used violence to bring them back into the fold. The dispute over slavery may have caused the south to secede, but the war was fought over whether or not the states could secede and whether government rules ny consent or violence.
Exactly. Further, the Emancipation Proclamation said that any Southern state that returned to the Union by January 1st 1863 could keep their slaves along with the Northern slave states which were unaffected and retained slavery until after the war was over.

The War of Northern Aggression was not fought over freeing obsolete farm equipment. It was about Federal tyranny retaining power.
