"Hence to fight and conquer in all your battles is not supreme excellence; supreme excellence consists in breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting." Sun Tzu, The Art of War, Bk 3.2

The economic sanctions you mention might have placed restrictions on goods from cooperating western nations, but that left the markets to other nations open and didn't do much over the thirty years they were in place. Not even western investment holders divesting impacted them, if anything both actions only shifted South Africa markets to be more aligned with the Asian market. The South Africans were also able to tackle the challenge created by soviet and communist Chinese trained African insurgents terrorizing the African populace, while developing nuclear power and nuclear weapons programs. So, if you want to focus on who might be the top of the group effort today, you might want to start there.

However, given what we're seeing in European countries, the advent of black rule never would've come about had white South Africans not enabled it.
