I think it might have been greed of the white farmers. They claimed more land than they could farm. If they had been less greedy, they might have chosen smaller farms, which they could run very well. Or they could have had more patience. If they had seen that their large land holdings would benefit their grand-children, rather than themselves, they might have had larger families.
It has been argued that in Classical times, possession of slaves impeded development of technology: since there were few disincentives experienced by the slave owner, there was little motivation to try and improve productivity with better machines.
