The economic rise of the United States would have been severely stunted without all of the free labor we had to produce valuable raw materials for export. We wouldn't have been able to exploit our natural resources nearly as quickly and effectively so who knows what our standing in the world in the early 20th century would have been going in to two world wars.
I think you're overvaluing free labor which only benefitted the slave owners. Without black slaves poor whites would have stepped up. Having paid workers distributes money into the economy more evenly.
