Won't pretend like I know but it wouldn't surprise me seeing as how most black slaves in Africa were captured by other tribes, or were their prisoners of war (really the same thing in most regards). Reputations of the winning tribes were definitely far, far from wholesome when it came to the treatment of the slaves. There was one, one of the biggest (and I believe the first to start trading slaves with the west) was ruthless and one of their primary purposes in warring with other tribes was just to catch slaves. They were mean and cruel, even to the children.

I remember one of our required reading books waaaay back in grade school actually included the journal of a slave trader, he certainly wasn't too keen on the leading tribes. Can't remember the name of that book, I recall it not being that bad. Much better reading material than was introduced in "higher education".
