Seems like this would be highly specific to whatever actual parcel of land or sea we end up on.

As I was typing the post I almost added that I find it unlikely that many modern civilized nations would be interested in invading at all. It is the same response I'd have to those who assert an anarchic society would collapse into total chaos, riots, and civil war without a government, when people so readily overlook the fact that people want to live peacefully with one another.

That said having even a single allied nation would go quite a long way towards ensuring no civilized nation would be a threat to us.

It would do less to protect against pirates. And I agree it depends on whether we're on land or at sea.

I think it's a matter of scale and success. If an Anarchistic society did succeed and provide a realistic alternative to existing Governmental institutions it could be perceived as a threat and that would lead to attack.

If for example we grew to a scale where slaves of other governments wanted to use our private banks, the government might seek sanctions against us or our citizen's banks as happened with Switzerland.

Similarly if we got successful enough that we wanted to protect ourselves from that eventuality; the mere act of wanting to protect ourselves would likely be used as justification for pre-emptive strike.

That is to say history has shown the only way a smaller nation prevents larger nations from interfering with their affairs or outright invading them is through the development of nuclear arms, and that the development of nuclear arms is seen as an aggressive act by those same larger nations.

Trade agreements with nearby countries can have defense provisions. That would probably be one of the first things to consider.

That's a good point. It would be nice to have some self-sufficient line of defense, beyond a militia, though.

Most have treaties or agreements, either formal or informal, with allied / other nations. Seems most practical for us, at least initially. Might not be easy though.
