If this is true, and I wouldn't be surprised if it is, then they'd be employing a tactic that some law enforcement agencies use that is quite unpopular: entrapment.

Imagine their reaction if a police department was baiting black teenagers into making drug sales. And yet it's apparently okay for them to do the same.

This is the problem with people who have positions but no principles. If "the enemy" does something it's horrible, but if a friend does it there's always some excuse.

And what unprincipled people like these don't understand is that some concept of fairness is inherent in human beings. (Non-human creatures as well, but that's beside the point.) You can't say to people, "I can criticize you for this, but you can't call me out for my hypocrisy," and expect to be taken seriously by a majority. It takes considerable doublethink to accept that, and only the craziest zealots can keep up that level of doublethink for long.
