I never had any strong belief that Trump was going to build a physical wall. I don't think very many of his voters did. But they did like that he was saying the right things on a topic that neither party would touch even though their voters wanted it.

He was, I think, primarily a protest vote. Against what leftism in America has become, against Hillary specifically, certainly against the Republican establishment, and against both parties for refusing to deal with the issues Americans feel are the most important. Trump voters like that he disrespects and upsets and stymies both parties. They like that he isn't a polished politician. They like that he's unrefined.

But he's on thin ice now. Voters need to let him know how pissed off they are about what they see as a betrayal. That's the only way he'll have political cover to, hopefully, so what he said he would do.
