Yeah Light is a pretty boy, who is super confident and has genius level intellect. This guy is average looking and acts awkward as fuck. L is supposed to be a genius too but he's like a bum, he's not supposed to be attractive, he's supposed to be dirty looking, malnourished (he pretty much only eats sweets) who doesn't sleep much at all hence the huge bags under his eyes. Also L is more Columbo-like in his approach, he's not super direct that he's on to Light, he plays it cool and just drops subtle hints to Light that he's on to him. The whole story is basically about the mind games Light and L play with each other. Two genius minds going at it.

The only way this can end up being good is if they follow the ending of the Japanese live action movie. That ending was perfect and way better than the manga/anime ending.

I havent watched the 2006 movie, which certainly will now, but I actually was moved by the ending of the anime. I don't know how you could improve it. It was so perfect when . I'll take your word for it for now, but I'm skeptical!

That scene still happens the same way, you can read the reply I made to BillBugle if you want to know the huge difference that makes it so much better. Keep in mind that the movie is in 2 parts, Death Note and Death Note II: The Last Name, so you need to watch them both to get the full story.

How does that end?

The manga got bloated with dumb extra characters that made no sense

Basically follows the manga up to the point where
