The competition narrative on GAF is one of the most irritating things. The N64 posed no true threat to the PS2 and it ended up being one of the most dominant consoles ever. The PS3 struggled out of the gate because Sony screwed up on the pricing. It had nothing to do with whatever Microsoft or Nintendo was doing. Sony will continue to be the market leader as long as they offer the best balance of first and third party games. That has nothing to do with competition. Nintendo struggles with third party games and Microsoft has no interest in developing in house talent. Sony has been successful because of savvy investments in studios and locking up marketing deals and content with third party devs. That has nothing to do with anything Microsoft or Nintendo is doing. Until Nintendo gets serious about hardware and wooing third parties (will never happen) and until Microsoft gets serious about original content they're doomed to second or third place. And yes, if not for the 599.99 catastrophe last generation, Sony would have run away last generation too in terms of sold hardware. They still sold more PS3s worldwide and that was with bungle after bungle.

I'd hope not since N64 was in the Saturn\PSx gen. Gamecube was in the PS2/Xbox gen.
