Not necessarily true, if they don't occasionally update the player's firmware to keep the encryption up to date (like say if you buy a player from a company that then goes under, or just decides to quit supporting your model), you're not going to be playing new movies on it any more. Thanks Hollywood. You really showed the "pirates" there, by making sure they're the only ones that can easily always rip movies and keep watching them forever.
Not to mention there are cheap players, expensive players, bare bones players, bells and whistles players, all sorts of players from all sorts of manufacturers. If anything the video game market with it's current three choices is downright simple compared to the movie player market.
