The whole story, supposedly he had a military ID? Its all weird.

Also the fact he was a canadian flight with a gun. Doesn't canada have strict gun laws? Checked or not, its hard to believe canada would allow a checked gun.

There are three classes of firearms in Canada, non-restricted, restricted and prohibited. Handguns can be restricted or prohibited depending on their functionality. Citizens can own restricted firearms provided they have a PAL. As for transporting firearms on a plane I'm not sure. WestJet seems to allow restricted firearms in checked luggage. Aircanada's site is less clear, it directs people to government websites to get info on transporting restricted firearms. They're probably allowed to be checked in after filling out paperwork.
