People in NYC throw out just about everything. Sanitation workers used to be able to take stuff home with them, but it looks like the department of sanitation ended that allowance a few years ago.

Yesterday I found a fully intact, three-story doll house that was four feet high. I almost brought it home, but I have no room for it. :(

I used to live in a luxury high rise and whenever the rich kids moved, they threw everything in the garbage instead of packing it up, because they could just buy new stuff wherever they were going. They threw away unopened lamps and decorations, brand new furniture, entire bathroom sets still in the plastic wrap, never worn clothes, etc.
